Biron, Charles de Gontaut, Duc de (1562-1602), French military leader, son of Armand de Gontaut. He served Henry IV, who made him admiral in 1592, marshal in 1594, and duke in 1598. In 1602, however, Biron was arrested and convicted of treason for giving secret military information to the king’s enemy, Charles Emmanuel I, duke of Savoy. Condemned to death, he was beheaded in the Bastille.
